Bearings perform the task of guiding and supporting shafts and axles with the least possible friction and wear. Bearings can be put under load in radial and/or axial direction. Rolling bearings can be designed to meet any load requirements and typically consist of bearing rings(inner and outer ring) and rolling bodies surrounded by a cage.

The rolling bodies either have the shape of a ball or a roller. They roll in the raceways of the ring members. This way, sliding friction is replaced by the much smaller rolling friction. The rolling bodies perform the task of transmitting the force applied to the bearing from one bearing ring to the other. In order to ensure a high-load carrying capacity, it is essential to arrange the highest possible quantity of rolling bodies with the maximum possible size between two bearing rings. The number and dimension of the rolling bodies depend on the diameter of the bearing. The cage keeps the rolling bodies separated from each other at a defined distance. Rolling bearings are almost maintenance-free.
Critical requirements for rolling bearings are durability, reliability and efficiency. The lubricant (typically grease or oil) must also be considered an integral part of rolling bearings, as a bearing will hardly function without lubrication. It is a growing trend to integrate seals into the bearing as well.
