The Suspension consists of tires, tire air, springs, shock absorbers and linkages connecting a vehicle to its wheels and allows relative motion between the two making for a smoother ride. While you do get a smoother ride a balance needs to be found and Suspension systems must support both road holding/handling and ride quality, which are at odds with each other. The setting of suspensions involves finding the right compromise. It is important that the suspension  keeps the road wheel in contact with the road surface as much as possible, because all the road or ground forces acting on the vehicle do so through the contact of the tires.. Usually the design of front and rear suspension of a car is different but new technology is making vast changes in this area. The control arm is a safety critical part that fits into the suspension.
